Alfredo Mires, a teacher who will live on forever in Chontas

This school year, the Ministry of Education called on all primary and lower secondary schools across the country to move away from being identified solely by a number and to adopt a name instead.

In accordance with educational regulations, at a meeting with parents from IEI No. 1033 in Chontas, Sócota and Cutervo, and local authorities, we set out to find a name for the school that honoured a figure who had made an outstanding contribution to education and culture.

We suggested various names of saints and other figures, but when Miss Marlene Paredes Gil, headteacher of the Chontas Early Years Educational Institution, spoke about the life and legacy of Alfredo Mires Ortiz, we unanimously decided to honour this educator and anthropologist who was so committed to the rural communities of Cajamarca.

After consulting with and seeking permission from Mr Alfredo’s family, who gave us the go-ahead, we submitted our application to the UGEL (Local Education Management Unit) in Cutervo for the relevant resolution to be issued. After a few days’ wait, we received the resolution approving this change.
Thanks to this, since June, the full name of our little school and our nursery has been IEI No. 1033 Alfredo Mires Ortiz – Chontas.

Our thanks also go to the Mires Mocker family for accepting the proposal and for all the effort and support they provide to the rural communities of our beloved Cajamarca.

With warm regards,
Teacher Marlene Paredes Gil
